In the heart of Ning’an, a city in Mudanjiang, Heilongjiang Province, lies a volcanic plateau unlike any other. Formed by ancient lava flows, this land gave rise to a true natural gem: Ning’an Slate Rice — often called “China’s finest rice”.
Also called Xiangshui Rice, this variety is prized for its jade-like green hue, crystal-clear grains, rich aroma, and soft, sticky texture. Even when served cold, it remains tender and flavorful. Revered for centuries, it was offered as tribute rice to the imperial courts from the Tang Dynasty's Bohai Kingdom through the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties.
This unique rice owes its origin to a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago, which formed mineral-rich basalt fields now known as "slate fields". Enriched by pristine mountain springs and the fertile, cold black soil of the region, this natural environment gave rise to the exceptional quality of Slate Rice.
