To Importers of Canadian Coldwater Shrimp
On March 7th, China announced a 25% tariff on a number of products from Canada, including coldwater shrimp. The tariff is scheduled to come into effect on March 20th.
This tariff creates a very difficult situation for both Canadian coldwater shrimp producers and their valued customers in China, many of whom have been doing business together for many years.
In the immediate term, we are hopeful that importers who purchased product that was shipped to China on or before March 7th will be able to convince your authorities to exempt those shipments from the tariff, regardless of their arrival date in China.
At the same time, we have urged the Canadian government to immediately engage the Government of China in discussion to resolve the situation, ideally to postpone implementation of the tariff pending the outcome of such discussions.
We remain hopeful but must also be realistic, and encourage importers and exporters to work together to shape effective business solutions to reduce the negative impact of this tariff, while we also work together to improve market conditions in China.
With warm regards,
Bruce Chapman
Executive Director
Canadian Association of Prawn Producers
