San Diego Coastkeeper(California, U.S.) is raising concerns over ongoing pollution at Tijuana’s beaches, where sewage and industrial waste continue to threaten public health, beaches, and local wetlands. Maquiladora (manufacturing factories) and failing sewage infrastructure are the primary sources of contamination, leading to frequent closures of beaches and wetlands due to excessive pollution. An estimated 10 million gallons of sewage flow into the Tijuana River daily. In early 2024, Mayor Aguirre sought $310 million in federal funding to repair a U.S. sewage treatment plant along the river, but Congress approved only $156 million—leaving critical repairs underfunded.
