FEBRUARY 17, 2025
IN MEMORIAMIt is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of Martha Moctezuma, Los Cabos Coastkeeper. Deeply loyal and highly effective, Martha’s passion for and dedication to protecting her community’s waters were unwavering. She will be profoundly missed by all who knew her. We send our heartfelt condolences to Martha’s loved ones, colleagues, and friends.
NEWS FROM THE MOVEMENT
Bargny Coast Waterkeeper(Senegal) and other environmental groups are backing the community of Bargny to block the construction of a coal-fired power plant. Despite facing legal challenges, residents are opposing the plant due to concerns over environmental degradation and health risks.
Cahaba Riverkeeper(Alabama, U.S.) launched Cahabapedia, a permanent and easily accessible digital map and data repository containing information on the Cahaba River watershed. The project was conceived following Cahaba Riverkeeper’s response to the 2016 Colonial Pipeline spills, which revealed that vital information about the river is scattered across many federal, state, and local agencies and organizations. Locating critical infrastructure and data about the river took valuable time and resources during the crisis.
Charleston Waterkeeper(South Carolina, U.S.) recently conducted an informal survey near Charleston’s Waterfront Park that found nurdles from at least 11 different spills in the marsh. Another survey on Sullivan’s Island uncovered small plastic beads, commonly known as nurdles, that appeared to come from four different sources. While these numbers alone don’t indicate a long-term trend, they serve as a stark reminder that this pollution problem continues to persist and that the local Legislature has failed to address it.
Fundy Baykeeper(Canada) is supporting the Town of Saint Andrews' plan to restore fish habitat on Campobello Island as compensation for a new wharf project. The restoration would involve removing part of a dike to improve fish passage and revitalize 21,800 square meters of mudflat and salt marsh.
Monterey Waterkeeper(California, U.S.) has welcomed Natalie Herendeen as the new Monterey Waterkeeper and Executive Director. Natalie previously served as the Executive Director and attorney for the Center for Community Advocacy (CCA), where she worked to improve housing, health, and economic conditions for farmworkers and low-income communities in the Salinas and Pajaro Valley. Before CCA, she was the litigation director at Legal Services for Seniors, where she handled cases involving financial abuse, evictions, housing, and consumer fraud for seniors in Monterey County.
Pasur River Waterkeeper(Bangladesh) and its partners observed World Wetlands Day by organizing a human chain to demand the shutdown of the Rampal Power Plant in order to protect the Sundarbans Wetlands.
San Antonio Bay Estuarine Waterkeeper(Texas, U.S.) Diane Wilson is leading the fight against ExxonMobil’s controversial plans to expand its petrochemical operations in Point Comfort, Texas. This latest project underscores the ongoing struggle of Gulf Coast communities against the petrochemical industry’s environmental impact. As an activist and retired shrimper, Diane previously won a landmark $20 million settlement against Formosa Plastics for dumping plastic waste into local waterways.

ADVOCACY RESOURCES
To support an effective opposition strategy against attacks on clean water, environmental protections, and policies, Waterkeeper Alliance has created a repository of tools and resources for Waterkeeper groups. This repository, available here, will be regularly updated based on policy developments, priorities, challenges, and opportunities. This content initially focuses on the U.S. presidential election and its implications for environmental issues, as it was created in response to requests from U.S. Waterkeeper groups. It was not intended to be exclusionary; however, we must consider that many of the policy decisions and actions from the Trump administration are likely to have global ramifications. For example, how has the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement affected your region? Do you fear it will undermine global efforts to combat climate change? Are there other specific challenges or opportunities related to the political and environmental landscape in your region that we should be aware of? To ensure we are meeting the needs of all Waterkeeper groups and strengthening a united global response to clean water attacks, we encourage you to share feedback with Bart Mihailovich, Waterkeeper Membership Services Director, to inform timely and tailored support for your advocacy efforts.
