The best way to protect the environment is to use local resources, such as food or building materials rather than transporting resources from other places. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Introduction

The link between long-haul transportation and environmental harm has been increasingly worrisome due to an unprecedented demands of production stemming from population boomand income increase. While a sole dependence on local resources is of course plausible in certain ways, I agree with those skepticswho doubt it as a one-size-fits-all approach.

At first glance, substantial greenhouse gas emissions could be reduced by cutting cross-boundary shipment in the form of either railways, air freight or lorries. For example, the bulk of direct emissions go to aviation, notably used in transportingfresh produces and meat products. Another environmental concern relates to excessive packaging for long-range transits. A waning reliance on imported materials could bode well for less non-biodegradable wastes crammed in landfills. Finally, local sourcing could allow for an optimal use of resources, ranging from recycling of metallic wastes to decomposing biomass for fertilizers.

However, the aforementioned may sound too starry-eyed for societies with poor access to various resources. Compounded by ever-growing natural disasters due to climate change, crop failures have prevented sustainable sourcing of locally-grown foods, while cheaper-priced steels abroad have dampened manufacturing enthusiasm locally. Even for those societies with sufficient access to essential goods, reduced environmental ripple effects could occur by centralization of certain industries instead of multitude of small-scale plants globally. Another worry loom over possible disruption of international interdependence in trades, if a complete localization of resources takes place.
