保拉·莫德松-貝克爾（Paula Modersohn-Becker），1876年-1907年，是位傳奇的德國女性歷史人物，也是位在當時頗為受爭議的畫家。盡管她的職業生涯相對較短，但她在藝術史上留下了不可磨滅的印記，尤其是在女性藝術家的歷史中。

她是一位開創性的畫家，是當時在保守的德國第一位畫自己裸體的藝術家，并在此過程中挑戰藝術中對女性身體的傳統表現方式和手段，這讓當時的其他畫家和評論家無法接受。

她一心渴望做個母親，結果僅僅做了19天的母親便死于產后血栓，命運弄人。她的生平的確是非常吸引人的電影題材。保拉的作品多以女性、孩子為主題，“母與子”是她畫得最多的題材，也是留給后人印象最深刻的作品。在她短暫的藝術生涯中，除早期少數作品體現出傳統以為外，她對藝術語言不斷探索嘗試，逐漸更注重由客觀景物到主觀的人本身的變化。

保拉曾到法國學習，深受凡高、高更、塞尚的影響，她畫架上的最后一件作品畫的是《向日葵靜物》。她最后的愿望就是去巴黎觀摩塞尚作品大展。

早在1898年她就宣稱“形式和色彩的偉大”。但保拉并不描繪個人的表白或情感，也不涉及抗議或戲劇性，這些特點將她同表現派劃分開來。

保拉的“母與子”系列展示的是一種純真甚至天真。而摒棄對自然的形與色模仿，通過主觀地夸張形與色的能量來表達心中的激情，而這恰恰是表現主義的核心理念。對表現主義而言，對這種激情的表達就是對現實的"解釋"。對表現主義而言，這種"解釋"要比眼前所見的現實更加"真實"。
