The Land Protection Deputy Director directs all aspects of protection, science, stewardship and community relations for Land Protection area within China program. Serves as the principle contact to government agencies, other conservation organizations, foundations and the academic community.
The Land Protection Deputy Director is responsible for the design and implementation of a comprehensive program to protect critical natural areas with high biodiversity value and key ecosystem functions. Also establishes the Conservancy as a major policy, science and practice partner within the area of land protection in China. The position holder defines policy and long-term conservation strategy, helps build strategic, scientific, and technical capacity in the field, develops key partnerships with public and private organizations to identify and resolve policy, technical and application issues and to widely communicate solutions and best practices.
The Deputy Director develops innovative scientific methods, analyses, tools and frameworks to address the economic, societal and natural system needs, engage multi-stakeholder support for systemic change efforts, and negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies, sub-national authorities, the private sector to achieve the Conservancy’s internal conservation priorities.
We’re Looking for You
Building on TNC’s strong existing leadership in protected areas, notably National Park and Land Trust Reserve in China, leads the formulation and execution of TNC China program’s protected areas strategy.
Drives collaboration with key think-tanks and research institutes on innovative protected areas policy, mechanism and roadmap at national, sub-national and sectoral levels.
Leads TNC policy impact work on protected areas in China, including defining the Conservancy’s policy priorities and developing government and think-tanks engagement plans.
Builds capacity internally and externally for protected areas strategy implementation, including raising awareness and addressing barriers, and support extensive outreach and training opportunities.
Helps to develop polit land protection projects with field offices and local partners in China.
Collaborates with Science Department to develop protected areas methodologies, toolbox and best management practices, etc.
Works with external partners to produce protected areas research reports.
Manages projects to fulfill requirements set for outcome, intermediary result, budget, deliverables, timeline and accountability.
Adapts to TNC’s science-based, evidence-based requirements and procedures.
Supports engagement with partners and donors in fundraising discussions for protected areas.
Coordinates with TNC scientists, policy experts and other colleagues to advance TNC’s global protected areas work.
Manages multi-disciplinary administrative and professional staff, with responsibility for performance management, training and career development. Establishes clear directions and set stretch objectives.
Establishes and maintains optimal standards of performance for the program while controlling costs and administering budgets.
Frequently makes independent decision based on analysis, experience, and context.
What You’ll Bring
BA/BS degree and 5 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience managing complex or multiple projects, including staffing, workloads and finances under deadlines.
Supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance.
Experience in partnership development with non-profit partners, community groups and/or government agencies
Experience negotiating.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
5-7 years’ experience in conservation project, national park, protected area, and project management or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated experience developing and implementing conservation strategy and workplans, covering field pilot project, enabling efforts and policy impact as well.
Excellent ability in strategic thinking and concept formulation.
Knowledge of current policy, trends and practices in conservation, protected areas management, and natural resource conservation.
Sound knowledge of science, methods and standards of national park and other types of protected areas.
Hands-on experience in full project management cycle.
Strong interpersonal communication and presentation skills to diverse internal and external audiences.
Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and Chinese languages.
Demonstrated experience in fundraising.
An advanced academic degree is a plus.

The Science Deputy Director provides technical and scientific support and leadership for conservation initiatives in Conservation by Design (CbD), other conservation activities and monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL). They may supervise and manage staff members.
The Science Deputy Director is responsible for the collection and synthesis of necessary ecological and socio-economic information to guide evidence-based conservation planning, implementation, and impact monitoring & evaluation.
The position holder designs and conducts scientific research projects, collect and analyzes data, writes reports and publish papers, and develops proposals in order to develop, manage and oversee programs within a conservation or business unit. Also synthesizes best practices and knowledge products from conservation initiatives, as well as provides capacity building activities for both internal staff and external partners. They must work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, in hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.
