至元九年（1272年），元世祖封其三子忙哥為安西王，鎮守陜西等地，在今西安建安西王府。
至元十六年（1279年）遂該京兆府為安西路。后來由于發生安西王叛亂，安西國被撤。皇慶元年（1312年），又改安西路為奉元路。
明洪武二年（1369年）三月，大將軍徐達進兵奉元路，改奉元路為西安府。
